Senior Scientist

KEY ROLE:
Multidisciplinary engineer to provide the lead managerial and technical role in development of a fluidics-based, prototype instrument for detection of biological and chemical agents. Development is based on an existing assay and being carried out by a multidisciplinary team composed of government, academic and private collaborators. Manage development of a fully autonomous instrument for detection of bacterial, viral, and chemical warfare agents. Develop and track project plan for instrument development to ensure required tasks are completed on time and within budget. Work with partners and vendors to communicate project requirements and monitor completion of subsystem components and tasks. Direct and supervise the activities of engineers and scientists. Maintain a close interface with the various programmatic and project elements to ensure teamwork and end-user communication. Maintain accurate and complete documentation regarding the design of the system and any problems and associated corrective actions. Follow up with development team and ensure that all solutions are incorporated into the final production documents. Brief project sponsors and corporate personnel on progress of system development. Write comprehensive reports on system development. Job will entail development of a prototype instrument that will require moderate lifting and bending during its construction.

REQUIREMENTS
-Requires at least 8 years of related experience in scientific study or engineering; a Masters Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science or a related technical discipline (or Bachelors Degree with significant related experience).
-Experience in development of advanced biological/chemical detection systems.
-Demonstrated knowledge of biological protocols such as DNA/RNA extraction, amplification, and sequencing is desirable.
-Demonstrated ability to engineer and construct biomedical devices.
-Experience in project lead or project management; Ability to lead a technical team with a variety of disciplines related to laboratory automation instrumentation and systems including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer control, chemistry and biology.
-Travel to vendor and subcontractor sites will be required. Travel will be for short durations (5 days or less). Local travel will be required between the lab and customer locations.
