Senior Chemist
Company: North America Mining Job Function: Management Job Description: Major Responsibilities: Under general supervision, to maintain the wastewater analytical laboratory and direct or perform all testing required; to verify compliance with all applicable regulations; maintain laboratory quality control and perform related work as required.
Performs routine and non-routine chemical and/or metallurgical analysis of wastewater and well samples using wet chemistry and instrumental analytical techniques, and reports findings.
Serves as technical expert on wastewater laboratory issues and analyses.
Maintains current working knowledge of applicable Arizona regulations for wastewater chemistry.
Responsible for new analytical method development.
Reviews and recommends new or enhanced laboratory equipment or protocols.
Reports quality control/quality analysis issues and makes recommendations to Chief Chemist or appropriate site management for correction.
Evaluates and administers contracts with vendors for the provision of services and equipment.
May contribute to site strategic planning and budgeting efforts for quality control/quality analysis.
Maintains current working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local regulations.
Maintains laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
Performs other duties as required.
- Education and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or closely related area.
Five (5) to seven (7) years experience in an area or areas relevant to the assignment.
Wastewater Lab experience a plus
Knowledge of the principles and methods used in complex chemical laboratory and quality assurance analyses. ICP, ICP/MS, IC experience a plus.
Previous state certification for wastewater a plus.
Able to research and analyze information of considerable difficulty and draw valid conclusions.
Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions. Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards

Work is in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see.
Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 40 pounds) during the course of the workday.
Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, or manufacturing plant environment, including hart hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required.
