The environmental chemist will lead the environmental laboratory under the direction of the analytical services manager, supervising and directly interacting with and working along side laboratory technicians. The environmental chemist will be periodically required to perform hands-on quantitative analysis of groundwater, process solids, surface liquids and similar samples using modern spectroscopic techniques such as inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy, flame atomic absorption spectroscopy, fixed gas; gas chromatography and ion chromatograph. The position will interact closely with the quality assurance/quality control supervisor in assuring continued certification of the laboratory, appropriate sample turnaround times are met, required holding times are satisfied and Environmental Protection Agency/California-Environmental Protection Agency approved methods of analysis are followed. This position will assist and prepare analytical reports, descriptive statistical summaries including graphical and tabular presentation of analytical results. Work will be performed with minor supervision and regular communication with the analytical services manager and quality assurance/quality control supervisor. Direct Reports

Conduct environmental analysis using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy, flame atomic absorption spectroscopy, gas chromatography, ion chromatographspectroscopic techniques and fixed gas chromatography analysis.Conduct advanced computer-based work in Excel, Word and Laboratory Information Management System software packages. Tasks will include accurate data entry, high level graphing, descriptive statistical manipulations and professional presentation of analytical data.Coordinate analytical sampling and analysis activities ensuring compliance with Environmental Protection Agency/California-Environmental Protection Agency methods of analysis and California State Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program requirements.Supervise and work closely with laboratory technicians to ensure steady development, employee well-being, counseling and motivation.Closely interact with the analytical services manager and laboratory quality assurance/quality control supervisor in assuring timely and accurate laboratory results and quality control.Regular interaction with environmental services personnel to ensure well-organized sampling analysis and data submission.Regular interaction with health and safety personnel to coordinate sampling and analysis of health and safety related samples.Conduct ordering, tracking and ensure timely deliveries of lab gases, consumables and supplies.Adhere to and support all safety and environmental rules, policies and procedures.Provide technical input to assist in development of project planning.Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

Exceptional computer skills using Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Experience with scientific graphing programs.Ability to read and interpret written documents such as accounting reports, safety rules, policy manuals and professional periodicals/journals. Ability to write routine reports, business correspondence and manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and employees at all levels.Ability to interpret and analyze data using statistical methodologies, unit conversions, algebra and calculus-based equations.Must have the ability to define obscure and incomplete problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to conceptualize and develop creative alternatives to problem resolution. Capability of interpreting an extensive variety of technical instructions in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
