Under general supervision assists with sophisticated experimental procedures in generation of transgenic mice. Responsible for maintaining breeding colonies for transgenic animal experiments. Excellent organizational skills required.1. Assists with routine experimental procedures for generation of transgenic mice by (a) manipulation of embryonic stem cells in vitro and microinjection of stem cells into blastocysts and (b) microinjection of DNA into pronuclei.
2. Maintains mouse breeding colonies for transgenic mouse experiments. Assists with breeding mice for embryo harvest, which may include 1-2 hours of work on weekends.
3. Assists with ordering supplies for transgenic core facility.
4. Assists with weaning, tagging and tail biopsies of transgenic mice.
5. Interacts with personnel from Harvard Medical Area Animal Resource Center to coordinate transfer of mice to other facilities and shipping of mice to investigators.
6. Participates in the interpretation of results through conferences with Principal Investigator.
7. Maintains established department policies, procedures and objectives, including the areas of quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
8. Performs all other duties and responsibilities as directed.
REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor of Science degree in a biological/physical science.Must possess initiative.
Must be able to set priorities and meet deadlines.
Requires excellent oral and written communication skills.
Must have broad knowledge of scientific principles, biological structures and laboratory techniques.
Excellent organizational skills.
Ability to troubleshoot research protocols.Normal laboratory environment.
Potential exposure to radioactive (including radioisotopes 35S and 32P), biohazardous and toxic materials, under controlled conditions; minimal risk when proper procedures are followed.
