Research Assistant, for a study of the genetic factors influencing the effectiveness of medications used in allergy, asthma and COPD. Responsible for collecting and recording individual participant demographic and medical questionnaire information, measuring height and weight, performing spirometry, and ensuring that blood specimens are transferred to the Channing Laboratory at the end of each day. Will be based at the clinical facilities where patients are being recruited into this genetic epidemiological study. Will be expected to perform quality control checks of all collected data and to transfer data to the Channing Laboratory using a secure internet based upload system. Will be expected to work independently and to work effectively with staff and Physicians at the recruitment site. Will work under supervision of the principal investigator, and will work closely with other professional staff, and supporting staff at both the recruiting site and at the Channing Laboratory.
REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor of Science degree with at least one year of job experience. Some biological focus a plus. Experience and expertise in operating computer systems is required, including word processing and form driven questionnaire data entry. Must have excellent communication skills, a high level of professionalism and integrity, and consistently display good judgment in a non-supervised setting. Must be reliable, attentive to detail, and capable of independent work and creative adaptation to local circumstances. Must have excellent quantitative skills and excellent oral and written communication skills. Must have excellent keyboard skills. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills, an ability to work with children and adolescents, as well as and good judgment of the abilities of participants who may have complex medical problems. Must possess excellent organizational skills, including the ability to work with clinic staff and to coordinate with the clinic physicians who are recruiting patients for this study. Must be able to learn to operate computer based systems quickly and easily. Experience in wordprocessing and form based data-entry preferred. Must be able to coach and encourage participants to perform their very best possible effort in maximally filling their lungs and forcefully exhaling during spirometry. Must be able to judge the quality and reproducibility of spirometry results.
