Cognitive Engineer/Usability Specialist

Purpose: TEKsystems has partnered with a dynamic software company to locate a Cognitive Engineer/Usability Specialist for a 6 month-to-perm opportunity in Silver Spring, MD.

The Cognitive Engineer's primary role is to understand the end-user's needs and ensure that products are designed to meet those needs. They are responsible for working with the users prior to a system being built or implemented, to make sure the system is compatible with the user's needs.

The Engineer will be responsible for using research methods to determine
end-user's needs. The results will be used to create user requirements specifications documents and establish the framework for designing a workflow. The engineer will then perform Usability tests to validate the effectiveness of the designs.

Typically a Cognitive Engineer has a background in behavioral sciences, or has experience doing research in behavioral sciences. This could include psychology, sociology or fields such as Human Factors or Human-Computer Interaction. They must be able to plan and run end-user interviews and usability tests. These results will lead to an application being developed that achieves all the goals of the end-user.

Responsibilities:
Understand various research protocols and techniques.
Understand structural, editorial, and visual design.
Conduct a formal Usability study and document findings and thoughtful recommendations.
Have an appreciation for the technical and business issues that impact their design work.
Understand how to follow the 508 guidelines.
