Conducting Ground and Flight Tests

Northrop Grumman leads a team of the nation's leading defense companies in developing and testing KEI. KEI is the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) element that is being designed to destroy ballistic missiles during their boost, ascent and early midcourse phases of flight. It is also the first ballistic missile defense weapon system to be developed without the constraints of the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. The KEI consists of a mobile launcher, an interceptor and a command and control battle management and communication (C2BMC) system that is housed in a transportable trailer. It is deployable anywhere in the world using U.S. military aircraft. Initially a land-based defensive capability, KEI is being designed for easy transition to sea-based platforms.
