Under supervision, to administrator therapeutic gases, aerosolized medications, basic pulmonary hygiene, provide CPR when needed to patients with cardiopulmonary disorders; and to perform other job related duties as required. This class represents the fully qualified working level in the Respiratory Care Practitioner series. Positions in this class are characterized by their responsibility for providing respiratory care services as prescribed by a physician in the; emergency Room, non-critical ambulatory or ward patients, and are routinely assigned to the critical care areas. This position is stinguished from the Respiratory Care Practitioner I, Registry Eligible – Per Diem in that this position can be assigned the most critical ventilator patients, required to perform more advanced blood gas laboratory responsibilities, may have to act as in a lead position in the intensive care units and may be required to assume lead duties in the absence of a Supervisor RCP and has obtained full registration from the Respiratory Care Board, California State Department of Consumer Affairs
REQUIREMENTS
Performs the full range of respiratory care services as prescribed by a physician; performs basic respiratory patient assessments, monitors patients undergoing respiratory care. Provide and monitors mechanical ventilatory support. Reports changes in patient’s condition to medical or nursing personnel; makes recommendations to physicians and nursing personnel when change in care is indicated. Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation, performs arterial punctures and blood gas analysis. Records information in the patient’s medical record, provides patient/family education/instruction in respiratory care, as needed. Provides instruction in respiratory techniques to other personnel, as needed. Routinely assigned to all critical care environments. Assumes supervisory duties in the absence of a Supervising RCP. Performs daily blood gas laboratory quality controls and maintenance procedures, required to make shirt workload and duty assignments. RECRUITING GUIDELINES: Knowledge of: Principles and practices used in the operation of respiratory care treatments and equipment; Signs and symptoms of cardiopulmonary diseases; Patient assessments and documentation of observations in medical records. Ability to: Use respiratory care equipment and techniques for effective treatment of a variety of cardiopulmonary diseases; Identify and intervene when minor repairs on various respiratory equipment; Follow both oral and written instructions of the physician and hospital staff; Effectively communicate with other members of the health care team; Instruct others in the use and operation of respiratory care equipment or techniques. Education (Required): Successful completion of a Respiratory Therapy training program approved by the American Medical Association. Recognition by the National Board for Respiratory Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist. Education (Required): Possession of an Associate of Science Degree in Respiratory Therapy from an accredited college. License (Required): Possession of a current Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license issued by the Respiratory Care Board, California State Department of Consumer Affairs. PRE-EMPLOYMENT: All employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of both a pre-employment physical exam, including a drug/alcohol test, and a criminal background investigation, which involves fingerprinting.
