Essential Duties and Responsibilities (in order of priority):
1.Demonstrate knowledge of pharmacology to include drug action, side effects, and contraindication.
2.Administers medication in a safe, efficient manner that is consistent with physicians’ orders.
3.Administers medications using direct observed therapy to prevent inmates from hoarding medications.
4.Performs appropriate checks to ensure the right medications are given to the right patient, at the right time, in right doses, by right route.
5. Documents all prescription drug use for inmate patients according to established drug recordkeeping practices.
6.Follows inspection principles in the administration of medication.
7.Observes all facility security policies in the administration of medication.
8.Maintains awareness of safety regulations and procedures at all times.
9.Disposes all sharps according to facility policy and procedure.
10.Provide inmate patient teaching relative to medications.
11.Documents the administration of all medications on the medication administration record. Documents the reasons for all medications not given.
12.Counsels and obtains a signed refusal from inmate patients who refuse medications.
13.Documents medical history and treatment of inmate patients, using standard medical record procedures.
14.Meets regularly with the Director of Nursing to review medical services administered to inmate patients.
15.Provides medical update to incoming medical staff prior to shift change.
16.Performs and documents segregation rounds.
17.Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement programs.
18.Collects and triages sick call requests.
19.Attends monthly Team Member meetings and meets annual Continuing Education requirements through attending appropriate courses and seminars.
20.Evaluates inmate patient health conditions and appropriately implements nursing protocols or referral systems.
21.Must be willing to help other team members with their work and work overtime if required. Is viewed as a team player.
REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications: Must be able to administer medical services to inmate patients with limited supervision. Requires a cooperative attitude to assist other healthcare team members as needed.
Education and/or Experience: Position requires Licensed Practical Nurse certification. Must provide state licensing documentation to demonstrate current Colorado state license. Experience requirements will vary depending on correctional facility requirements, but generally require a minimum of two (2) years LPN experience in a hospital, doctor’s office or correctional facility.
Problem Solving / Decision-Making: Must have strong knowledge of all areas of general healthcare services within the correctional healthcare environment.
Physical Requirements: Normal work environment is in a correctional healthcare facility, which involves some physical risks requiring basic safety precautions. This position routinely requires standing, bending/stooping, crawling, climbing, pushing medication carts, lifting objects less than 20 pounds, or carrying objects less than 20 pounds. May lift supply boxes up to 40 pounds periodically but not every day. This position requires frequent walking throughout the correctional healthcare facilities and may require walking up and down several flights of stairs.
Equipment typically required to be used for this position: Standard medical facility equipment including, but not limited to: AED, EKG, blood pressure, oxygen, sterilization, glucometer, Doppler, pulse oximeter, and other medical equipment as applicable.
