Flight Respiratory Therapist - Respiratory
Hartford Hospital is an acute care hospital, located in the south end of Hartford Connecticut. The Hospital came into being in 1854 when a catastrophic explosion created the need to treat the many injured. In 1994, The Institute of Living, a psychiatric hospital founded in 1822, became the Mental Health Division of Hartford Hospital.
Today, Hartford Hospital is a major tertiary care and community health care center, serving a statewide patient population. The hospital has been a recipient of numerous highly prestigious national awards, recognizing the institution for its medical excellence, as well as its work in the areas of community relations, minority recruitment and the provision of health services within a diverse population.Affiliate: Hartford Hospital
Hours: 1 FT 36 hours.Provide critical care and advanced life support related to respiratory care assessment and procedures to patients on the scene, at receiving or referring hospitals, and during flight operations. Maintains proficiency in the indications and procedures of the following equipment and skills such as: MAST utilization, EKG’s, IV (including PIV/EJ and sternal/pedi IO), NGT/OGT insertion, pacing/defibrillation, needle decompression, combi-tube insertion, standard and inverse intubation, and surgical cricothyroidotomy, Intra Aortic Balloon Pump, central line insertion, pericardiocentesis, isolette, IVAC IV Infusion Pump, Zoll monitor (EKG, pacing/defibrillator use). Participates in the safety of helicopter operations such as assist the pilot in the navigation of the aircraft and the utilization of the radios during flight operations.Assist/review and co-sign the documentation of the patient care rendered by the flight crew, and complete debriefing for each flight.Functions as a member of the Emergency Department Team at Hartford Hospital or W. Backus Hospital when assigned to flight duty, providing respiratory assessment and care, assisting the Emergency Department as able and provides patient care report via radio and/or in person to other health care providers as indicated. Performs the therapy, management, diagnostic evaluation and care of complex patients with unpredictable outcomes which affect the cardiopulmonary system and associated aspects of other system functions being transported by air ambulance. This position involves the integration of in-depth pathophysiologic concepts and advanced skills along with critical thinking and independent decision making in order to enhance the care of the critically ill o rseverely injured patient in the unique environment of air medical tranport. Reports to Manager.As a teaching hospital, Hartford Hospital is a primary affiliate of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and Dentistry for both graduate and undergraduate medical education.

REQUIREMENTS
Associates Degree Required, Bachelor's Degree preferred from an AMA approved Respiratory Therapy program. Must have 36 months post graduate critical care experience in a tertiary center. Licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner by the State of Connecticut. Certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). Must be EMT-B certified: EMT-1 or EMT-P preferred. ACLS and PALS certifications required, NALS within 1 year of hire. Active member of the American Association for Respiratory Care, preferred. Must pass initial and subsequent annual physical, including vision, hearing, weight, fitness, and lifting standars, as mandated by the Medical Director of Occupational Health. Proficient in Microsoft Office, computer skills, competent with the LIFE STAR documentation program and adhere to the Groupwise policy. Must have high level of technical skills and expertise, demonstrate clinical decision making ability and function as a self-directed work team member. Must have excellent interpersonal skills, familiarity with medical terminology and the ability to read, write, and speak English.
