The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) is seeking a Managing Editor to work in its downtown Chicago headquarters. The successful applicant will oversee the day-to-day operations of the association’s bimonthly magazine, Government Finance Review and manage the development of newsletters, special reports and other GFOA publications. The Managing Editor reports to the Editor in Chief, who is also the Director of GFOA’s Research and Consulting Center. In consultation with the Editor in Chief, the Managing Editor:
Develops the editorial calendar for each calendar year, including themes for each issue.
Initiates ideas for articles and solicits manuscripts from potential authors.
Reviews unsolicited manuscripts for potential publication.
Works with authors to meet the quality standards required for publication in the magazine.
Edit all articles for substance, grammar, and style.
Consults with graphic designer to conceptualize layout and art for the cover and feature articles.
Proofread all page proofs from the graphic designer and the printer.
Manage the administrative aspects of the magazine, including budget, print and design contracts, production process, etc.
Depending on background and experience, conduct research, consult, train or write op topics of interest to GFOA’s members. REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have two or more years of experience writing and editing, preferably for periodicals, some government or government-related experience and familiarity with current local government finance and management issues. A bachelor’s degree in a related field (for example, political science, journalism, public policy, economics) is required. Applicants with higher degrees in one of these fields will be given higher preference.
