Reporter, Comm News I / Courts Reporter

Purpose:
The Los Angeles Times has an immediate opening for a Staff Writer-Reporter for the Daily Pilot. Responsible for gathering, analyzing and writing about local news and events related to Orange County City Hall.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Covering an assigned beat or area of specialization and to generate story ideas; researching and investigating news and information in order to verify the accuracy of reports; determining the news worthiness of events and select news for reporting and follow-up.

Scouting the local area for news, events, and celebrity issues of interest to the Orange County(City Hall); monitoring other news reporting agencies, services, and publications in order to stay abreast of current trends and issues.

Scheduling articles for publication and select appropriate sources of information; scheduling interviews with press agents, politicians, celebrities, and other sources that will support the editorial content and mission of the Daily Pilot; cultivating and utilizing all informational sources and resources in support of news articles and informational reports.

Writing clear, concise, accurate and fair stories and informational reports in a timely manner that will be of interest to readers.

REQUIREMENTS

- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.

- Working knowledge of PC's and word processing applications.

- Must be able to work irregular hours as necessary for gathering news, writing reports, and meeting deadlines including the ability to work weekends and holidays as required.

- A Bachelor's degree or equivalent, related experience.

- Must possess a valid driver’s license and provide for own transportation to work and to sites in the local Orange County area for news gathering and reporting.
