Communications – Radio Operator-Maintainer

In the Alabama Army National Guard, the Radio Operator-Maintainer is a Soldier who supervises, installs, operates, and performs preventive maintenance checks and services on amplitude modulation (AM) radios, Enhanced Position Locating and Reporting System net control stations, radio teletypewriter assemblages, and Army Special Operations communications systems. He/she also operates manual or automated communications systems. This specialist may also be called upon to operate and perform preventive maintenance checks and services on assigned vehicles and power generators.

The Army National Guard depends upon reliable communications systems and their operators to perform day-to-day procedures as well as critical wartime operations. The Radio Operator-Maintainer is a highly valued member of the Guard team, providing the vital communications link necessary for the successful completion of many important missions.

The Alabama Army National Guard is an elite group of Citizen-Soldiers who dedicate a portion of their time to serving their nation. Guard members train part-time to be ready full-time, should their state or nation call them to serve.

Major Duties:

Installs, operates, and performs preventive maintenance checks and services and unit-level maintenance on single channel radio, radio teletypewriter, Army Special Operations communications equipment, and Enhanced Position Locating and Reporting System net control stations, and associated equipmentInstalls, operates, performs strapping, restrapping, preventive maintenance checks and services and unit-level maintenance on communication security devicesPrepares and transmits messagesReceives, records, and processes messages to addressees or distribution sectionsOperates and performs preventive maintenance checks and services on assigned vehiclesInstalls, operates, and performs preventive maintenance checks and services on assigned power generatorsDirects the installation of radios and antennasImplements communication security, operational security, and physical security policies and proceduresRecognizes electronic countermeasures and implements electronic counter-countermeasures
