Air Traffic Control Operator
In the Alabama Army National Guard, the Air Traffic Control Operator is a Soldier who supervises and provides air traffic control services at cutting-edge air traffic control facilities. These services include using flight-following visual flight rules, instrument flight rules and special visual flight rules. These highly valued individuals provide a critical link in the National Guard’s extensive aviation operations.
The Alabama Army National Guard is an elite group of Citizen-Soldiers who dedicate a portion of their time to serving their nation. Guard members train part-time to be ready full-time, should their state or nation call them to serve.
Major Duties
Operates fixed and tactical air traffic control towers, radars, and flight-following facilitiesAssists in the installation, and relocation of tactical ATC facilitiesOperates tactical navigation aidsApplies air traffic control rules, procedures, and regulationsProcesses flight plan dataFormulates and issues air traffic control clearances, advisories, and control informationMaintains logs, records, files, and tape recordings of voice communicationsInterprets and relays “notice to airmen” informationReads and interprets Department of Defense Flight Information Publications and aeronautical chartsAnalyzes air traffic to identify and resolve potential conflictsControls airborne and ground traffic on and in the vicinity of the airportUpdates Automated Terminal Information Systems and performs radar scope alignmentCoordinates terminal/enroute controlProvides non-radar approach control, ground-controlled approach, enroute flight flowing, and tower servicesBriefs shift personnel on runway utilization, airfield conditions and weather/ground activities
