These native Alaskan peoples embrace and encourage family values and love their community. The Native Alaskan people believe that their elders are to be respected and valued. Those that come to a place called Bethel, Alaska will also serve over 58 villages that span a territory the size of Oregon. Many of these villages still do not have running water. These people truly appreciate the medical assistance provided to them, giving those that serve respect and honor.
Fair Compensation
Compensation for your profession is market competitive: (pay grades are currently being revised with new a new hourly rate structure soon to be in place.) Benefits are excellent with extremely low co-pays for full health insurance. A single person pays just $10 bi-weekly, a family $30 bi-weekly. The retirement plan is also very good with a matching program in addition to a generous amount put in your retirement for each and every employee. We have a signing and retention bonus over the course of three years of $60,000. A very competitive relocation package offered.
Eligibility for Loan Repayment up to $20,000.00 per Year
In order to help assist these underserved people, the Indian Health Services (IHS) has loan repayment programs available. Loan repayment is not guaranteed with offer of employment, as all employees must apply directly through Indian Health Services. Since this is not absolutely guaranteed, we ask that you do not make this program your sole reason to come work in Bethel. Instead, look at it as a potential added bonus for serving your underserved fellow man.

The Opportunity
Position Summary:
Spectrum of Practice
•Full-time and locum positions available
•Full spectrum, IM primary care and inpatient services
•Care for acute and chronically ill adults, women’s health an provide consultation services


Type of Work.
•Continuity and IM referral clinics
•Urgent and emergency telephone consultations with health aides in villages
•Inpatient services and no ICU or “step down” unit care
•Consultant for FP & EM physicians and midlevel staff
•May visit village and sub-regional clinics
•Supervise and mentor students and residents
•Mentor and act as consultants for NP’s and PA’s
•May do endoscopies, inpatient procedures, outpatient procedures and treadmills if trained and experienced
•May work in ER as second physician provider
•Call is approximately 5 nights and 1 weekend per month or every third weekend without assigned night call
•Work rotations are primarily inpatient with 2-3 ½ day outpatient clinics per week and days off for weekend work
