Motor Carrier Enforcement Officer

The Oregon Department of Transportation was established in 1969 to provide a safe, efficient transportation system that supports economic opportunity and livable communities for Oregonians. ODOT develops programs related to Oregon’s system of highways, roads, and bridges; railways; public transportation services; transportation safety programs; driver and vehicle licensing; and motor carrier regulation.

MOTOR CARRIER ENFORCEMENT OFFICER

The Motor Carrier Enforcement Officer protects Oregon highways and structures by educating, monitoring, regulating and providing technical assistance to effect compliance with motor carrier laws, rules and regulations involving size, weight, registration, and safety laws and regulations. This position is located in Roseburg.

As a Motor Carrier Enforcement Officer you will:
• Analyze vehicles at platform scale facilities, portable scale sites or roadside traffic stops for compliance with state statues, administrative rules, and pertinent federal regulations.
• Within guidelines, independently determine appropriate type(s) of law enforcement action(s) including warnings, uniform traffic citations, placing vehicles or drivers out of service and/or detaining vehicles and drivers for noncompliance.
• Monitor weight station bypass routes; drive to remote duty assignment locations in state vehicles; may issue citation(s) and/or require operator to proceed to a weight station.
• Take other appropriate actions within guidelines (e.g.: explain the basis of the violation and the reason for the enforcement action taken).
• Compute and collect scheduled bail money and issue receipts.
• Maintain knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures governing vehicle size and weight, overweight and over dimensional operations, inter-jurisdictional agreements, bail schedules, court procedures, vehicle registration and weight-distance tax. REQUIREMENTS
Position Qualifications include:
• Two years of public contact/customer service experience which involved dealing with the public in person or by phone, providing information about services/programs, or explaining and/or applying laws, rules, regulations/procedures; AND experience or training using computers to retrieve and input data.
• Completion of an Associate's degree will substitute for one year of the public contact experience.
