NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB
The Center for Application Development and Software Engineering (CADSE) in the Computing Applications and Research (CAR) Department has an immediate opening for a Computer Scientist in the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) Group. The successful candidate will be matrixed to the Operations and Regulatory Affairs Division (ORAD) of EPD to provide programming and maintenance support of the ChemTrack system for tracking and reporting of LLNL’s chemical inventories. Will report programmatically to the ChemTrack and Technical Services Group Leader in ORAD and administratively to the Environmental Protection Institutional Programs Group Leader in CADSE.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Develop software to efficiently store, check, and retrieve chemical data from the ChemTrack database according to documented requirements.
- Gather and document user requirements, analyze, design and incorporate new features and extensions into ChemTrack.
- Develop and implement suitable user interfaces using appropriate tools to run on the Web or on PDAs.
- Monitor database quality assurance, data access and retrieval, and security.
- Develop new tools for use with the ChemTrack system to meet new demands and provide quality improvements.
- Prepare Software Quality Assurance (SQA) documents following EPD SQA guidelines.
- Provide customer support and training.
- Act as a technical resource for ChemTrack and Technical Services staff.
REQUIREMENTS
ESSENTIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
- BS/BA in computer science, engineering, mathematics or physical science, or equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge.
- Experience in software design and development.
- Experience in relational database programming in applications such as Oracle, demonstrated experience in SQL.
- Experience developing Web applications using Java, PL/SQL, or other programming tools.
- Experience developing PDA applications using C# or other programming tools.
- Experience in UNIX, Windows, and Macintosh operating systems.
- Experience working on a team, as well as independently, in a multi-disciplinary environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure with short deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with and respond to customers.
- Good communication skills, both oral and written.
