COMPUTER SCIENTIST/CONTROL SYSTEM ENGINEER

The Computing Applications and Research Department has an opening in the National Ignition Facility (NIF) Division for a Software/Control System Engineer within the System Controls Team to develop software for Target Diagnostic systems. The NIF Control System is highly distributed among 100's of Front End Processors and more than 10 Supervisory computers. The Supervisory Control System provides operator controls, data processing, and archiving. Front End Processor systems directly interface, control, and collect data from the Laser and Target Area equipment. Technologies used are object-oriented design and coding, Java, CORBA communications, Java Swing graphical user interfaces, CVS, Eclipse, and Visual Studio 2005. The Supervisory Systems are Sun SparcStations running Solaris; the Front End processors are VME systems running VxWorks, or PC based systems running Windows XP. The scope of this position includes close collaboration and interaction with scientists and engineers within the Controls team and other areas of the NIF project.
The Software Engineer will specify the requirements, design, implement, and perform subsystem and integration testing for one or more Control Applications. The candidate will also provide documentation of the requirements and the design, and user and test manuals. Implementing application software that operators will use to control NIF target diagnostics and performing software engineering using object-oriented analysis, design, and programming techniques will be important. The candidate will prepare software design descriptions (SDDs) for control subsystems and supervisory frameworks, as well as develop user interface specifications and designs. Documenting all designs and maintaining software configuration control, as well as assuring that the cost/performance/schedule milestones are met, and participating in or leading formal and informal design reviews are important responsibilities.Requirements:
•Bachelor’s in Engineering or Computer Science, or equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge
•Experience with the software engineering process: generation of requirements and design documents, coding under configuration control, and preparation of test plans and user documentation
•Substantial programming experience in an object oriented language like C++, or Java
•Experience working with the Windows XP operating system
•Experience working with Intel or AMD based PC Hardware platformsDesired:
•Master’s in Engineering or Computer Science
•Experience in object-oriented techniques, particularly with the UML modeling language
•Familiarity with CASE tools
•Experience in distributed control systems or other distributed computing problems
•Experience designing and developing GUIs
•Experience in embedded operating systems such as Windows XP Embedded
•Experience interfacing with GPIB, USB, and Fire wire devices
•Experience using PC 104 hardware platforms
•Experience in graphics/analysis tools such as Interactive Display Language
