TRANSPORTATION MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN III
We are currently hiring qualified candidates for this position in Denton, McKinney, Dallas and southern Dallas County.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Performs skilled transportation maintenance work. Work requires use of maintenance tools and/or operation of some types of heavy equipment. Has multiple areas of responsibility. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
DUTIES
Maintains highways and rights-of-way; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs.
Assists in troubleshooting and performing skilled repairs.
Learns to operate or may operate complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large gradall, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor and profiling/milling machine.
Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper and dump truck.
Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower.
Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment.
Fills out various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, PMI and records work in progress.
Assists in training other employees and may serve as a lead worker.
Assists in sanding or cleaning bridges and roads, posting warning signs, helping the public and performing other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.
Performs roadway repairs and hauls materials to job sites.
Assists with materials testing activities.
Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic; as required moves items related to these activities.
Moves/picks up litter and roadway debris to assure a safe thoroughfare.
Performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and brush.
Maintains picnic and rest areas and maintenance yards.
Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas.
Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites.
Maintains and repairs school crossing lights.
Assists stranded motorists as required.
Repairs and installs signs and delineators, mail box supports and posts, and performs some welding; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
Assists in inspection of roadways during day and night to identify damaged and missing delineators and signs.
Assists in performing sign inventories, as required.
Applies paint to steel bridges and other steel structures; performs abrasive blasting to remove existing paint, rust, rust scale and deposits that interfere with coat adhesion, maintains and services equipment, when directed.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience
Two (2) years experience in maintenance, construction and/or an equipment operation-related field. (Experience requirements may be satisfied by full-time experience or the prorated part-time equivalent.)
