ABOUT THE POSITION

Varied work schedule, including weekends and holidays.

Eighteen years of age is the minimum age requirement at the time of application. The Public Services Department reserves the right to obtain proof of the minimum age requirement before the first day of work.

Possession of a Commercial Drivers License is required at the time of application.

Completion of a standard City application form and the Pre-Employment Verification And Release Form (the “Applicant Complete” portions only) are required. SNOW REMOVAL EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

Definition

To perform snow removal equipment operations that may include operating snow plows, loaders, sanding trucks, rotary snow plows, other power-driven and hand-operated equipment. To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the maintenance of streets and other public service areas; and to provide technical support to various departments.

Supervision Received

Receives immediate supervision from a Supervisor or Superintendent, and technical and functional supervision from a Lead Street Maintenance Worker or a higher level maintenance position.

Examples of Essential Duties - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Operate heavy construction equipment such as backhoes, motor graders, large front-end loaders and snow blowers, for a variety of public works operations involving street, drainage systems and snow removal.

Operate light construction equipment and power tools such as compressors, jack hammers, compactors, paint sprayers, sandblasters, concrete saws and drainage rodders.

Perform minor repairs on equipment and report the need for major repairs; check and adjust fluid level; replace brooms on sweepers; grease and lubricate moving parts as required.

Work unusual and prolonged work schedules; work 12-hour shifts during snow removal activities; regular work days may include weekends; employee may be assigned to after hours and weekend call out.

Maintain and repair service equipment; maintain tools and equipment in working order.

May perform a variety of general manual labor duties.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

Common tools and materials used in street maintenance.

Basic street repair and maintenance procedures and practices.

Safe work practices and policies.

Ability to:

On a continuous basis, know and understand maintenance activities and observe safety rules. Intermittently, identify potential safety hazards; locate equipment; interpret work orders; remember supervisor’s instructions; and explain jobs to other employees.

Intermittently, sit while driving a piece of equipment; stand and walk while performing maintenance activities; bend and twist to adjust equipment; kneel and squat to review work; climb up on heavy equipment to begin operations; perform simple grasping and power grasping; pushing and pulling; fine manipulation; and lift or carry weight of up to 100 pounds.

Perform street maintenance activities.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Work with the variety of tools related to public works maintenance.

Operate a variety of maintenance equipment in a safe and effective manner in routine situations.

Perform heavy manual labor.

Work independently in the absence of supervision.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Experience and Training

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:
One year of experience in the operation of snow removal equipment.

Training:
Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.

License or Certificate:

Possession of a valid Class B California or Nevada driver’s license or equivalent.
