POSITION
To fill one regular full time, with benefits, Facilities Worker position currently available, and to create a 12-month hiring list to fill future openings in 06/07. All qualified and interested candidates are encouraged to apply.
Under general supervision of the Facilities Manager, the Facilities Worker performs semi-skilled and skilled building crafts work in the fabrication, installation, replacement, and repair of building structures and components in various municipal facilities. The Facilities Worker is a journey level maintenance position that requires the incumbent to work under general supervision and within a framework of established procedures. Must perform a full range of duties with only occasional instruction or assistance, are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit, and may exercise functional and technical supervision over lower level maintenance staff.
Works unusual and prolonged work schedules; works 12 hour shifts during snow removal activities; regular work days may include weekends; employee may be assigned to after hours and weekend call-out.
Environment: Indoor and outdoor environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, mechanical and electrical hazards, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain; work at heights; incumbents may be required to respond to emergency calls after hours including evenings and weekends.
Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work indoors and outdoors; to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; to frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, twist, grasp, and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to climb unusual heights on ladders; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight; to operate assigned equipment and vehicles; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Performs a full range of building crafts work including structural fabrication, installation, repair, and maintenance tasks, during maintenance and repair, remodeling, and new construction assignments.
Installs, repairs and replaces walls, flooring, ceilings, windows and roofing on municipal building, as well as other structures related to municipal facilities.
Repairs and replaces plumbing fixtures including sinks, toilets, faucets and pipes.
Tests, repairs and installs electrical systems and fixtures.
Designs, constructs, repairs, and installs wood and formica tables, countertops, cabinets.
Hangs and installs doors, closures, windows; installs drywall and wood paneling.
Pours and finishes concrete structures; constructs wood forms for concrete construction projects.
Operates hand and power tools and equipment including table saws, drills, planer, router, and sanders.
Operates heavy construction equipment such as motor graders, large front-end loaders, backhoe, forklift, and dump trucks for a variety of construction operations including snow removal.
Inspects building facilities to identify building maintenance needs.
Leads and assists others in a variety of maintenance and repair work.
Maintains accurate records of work performed, materials used, and associated cost.
Cleans and maintains the City’s building crafts shop and the tool inventory.
Makes routine and emergency purchases as authorized and required.
May perform a variety of general manual labor duties.
Performs related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties
Knowledge of-
Principles, practices, and procedures used in a variety of building construction work.
Tools and equipment necessary for efficient and effective work performance.
Methods and techniques used in estimating time and materials for assigned projects.
Basic building code requirements.
Safe work practices.
Ability to-
Know and understand operations and observe safety rules.
Analyze problem equipment; identify and locate maintenance issues.
Interpret work assignments and explain maintenance issues to others staff; remember tasks and daily assignments.
Perform highly skilled work in the trades areas.
Estimate necessary materials and supplies with a reasonable degree of accuracy.
Work with independence and make decisions relative to work methods, tools, and materials.
Understand and interpret oral and written directions, including construction drawings, plans, and blueprints.
Prepare and maintain records, reports, and work estimates.
Use and care for tools and equipment used in building trades work.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Education and Experience Guidelines –
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education/Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by additional specialized training in building trades or a related field.
Experience:
Two years of responsible building trades experience.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain by date of employment, a valid California or Nevada Class B driver’s license.
