General Manager
The Washington Area Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA), provides rail, bus and paratransit services to a regional population of 3,400,000 people living in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia and is the second largest rail transit system and the fifth largest bus network in the United States. Metro operates under the governance of a Board of Directors made up of 12 individuals, which includes four directors (two voting members and two alternates) from the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. The system, operating in the Nation’s Capital, is highly diverse in its issues as well as in its workforce.
Overseeing the activities of a staff of 14 executive managers responsible for a workforce of 10,000 employees and reporting to the Board of Directors, the General Manager (GM) is responsible for all day to day operations and business affairs of the Authority. He or she will be a proven leader in the world of transportation or other compatible, equally complex, regulated industries. It is crucial that the GM be a proven legislative and Federal Transit Administration relationship builder, as the need for funding and for regulatory, economic, community and legislative support are keys to the success of this complex system. Additionally, in this rapidly growing regional setting, the new GM must be sensitive to the potential for diverse goals and objectives within the various participating constituencies and locales.
REQUIREMENTS
Successful candidates will possess a four-year degree from a recognized college or university; a graduate degree is a distinct plus with progressively responsible and diversified executive management experience.
