FUNCTION OF POSITION
A Chief Psychologist, Correctional Facility (CF), under general direction, in a State correctional facility in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is responsible for the overall supervision of psychologists in a correctional institution.
As a supervisor of psychological services, plans, direct, and coordinates the various psychological activities consistent with the mission of a particular correctional facility.
A Chief Psychologist, CF, is responsible to maintain order and supervise the conduct of inmates; to protect and maintain the safety of persons and property; and to do other related work. Positions allocated to this level are found at correctional institutions with major mental health care programs.
Typical tasks include, in a correctional setting, investigating behavior problems or mental disorders; examining, diagnosing, classifying, and prescribing psychological treatment and rehabilitation programs for adult offenders in a correctional facility; supervising and participating in diagnosis, care and treatment of psychotic inmates in a correctional institution; securing and reviewing data on heredity, congenital and environmental factors pertaining to individual offenders; applying findings of psychological examination; directing the giving of psychotherapy and other treatment for preventing and correcting behavior disorders; directing and participating in staff conferences and clinics for the discussion of psychological problems of offenders and their care and treatment; recommending transfer, parole or discharge of offenders and recommending arrangements for follow-up and aftercare during parole; securing and training assistants; planning, directing and evaluating their work, and taking or recommending appropriate action with respect to their work performance; preparing reports, and doing research on problems of adult criminality; etc.
SALARY RANGE$5,884 - $7,509 per month
All correctional institutions may authorize a “Hiring Above the Minimum” (HAM) a salary differential. Extraordinary qualifications, and experience and current salary will determine the actual starting salary.

Chuckawalla Valley State Prison, Calipatria State Prison, and Centinela State Prison after 12 months
of full-time employment)
• Eleven (11) hours per month allowed for Annual Leave Credits. Increases to 14 hours after 37 month
of full-time employment.
• License or Certificate Renewal Fee Reimbursement (Actual Cost)
• Professional Education and Training (5 days per fiscal year)
• Continuing Education (18 hours per fiscal year)
• Institutional Workers Supervision Pay Differential
• California Public Employees’ Safety Retirement System (Exempt from paying into the Federal Social Security System)

REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must possess a valid license as a Psychologist issued by the California Board of Psychology and possession of an earned Doctorate Degree in Psychology from an education institution meeting the criteria of Section 2914 of the Medical Board of California’s Business and Professions. AND Either I At least two years of experience as a licensed Psychologist in the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. OR II At least three years of experience as a licensed Psychologist in a forensic setting such as a local jail or community-based forensic treatment unit. The hiring authority will review your credentials and evaluate your experience and recent earnings to determine if a HAM salary differential may be applicable.
