General Description: Under general direction maintain the sorting area; perform general stack maintenance; and shelve library materials.

Description of Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintain sorting area by arranging materials in the proper order as directed.
Oversee tasks associated with the maintenance of the sorting area by directing and guiding the work of other Materials Handling staff in the absence of the supervisor.
Shelve general collections materials, government publications, and journals as needed.
Transport books from check-in room to sorting area.
Assist with stack shifts when necessary.
Perform general stack maintenance by monitoring label ranges for accuracy, resetting the shelving, etc.
Maintain awareness of preservation issues.
Assist with ongoing shelf-reading projects.
Observe condition of the stacks and shelved materials on a regular basis and notify the supervisor of the condition of the stacks and identify problem areas.
Assist the Materials Handling supervisor with training, supervising and payroll duties for part-time temporary staff.
Perform one library service hour per week
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to work well with detail.
Knowledge and understanding of the Library of Congress classification system in order to shelve library materials correctly and to perform other stack maintenance tasks.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers and student assistants.
Physical ability to comfortably move and shelve library materials from place to place. Must have ability to lift a minimum of 40 lbs. and to push fully loaded book trucks on a recurring basis.

REQUIREMENTS


Requirements:
High school diploma or GED; one to two years of college work preferred.
Two to four years of relevant work experience.

Other preferences: Experience working with the Library of Congress classification system.
