Academic Advisor – International Learners
SUMMARY - Academic advisors are responsible for assisting in the design of Learners’ academic programs of study, transcript assessment and course request approvals, involvement in NCU's Learner retention program, and working closely with department faculty, Learner Affairs, the Registrar and other members of the Academic Affairs team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES -
Under direction of the Dean of Learner Services the Academic Advisor is responsible for performing the daily activities of academic advising, which include:
•Evaluating applications, and transcripts, to determine applicants’ suitability for admittance into NCU degree program.
•Developing degree plans and/or conditions for admittance into NCU degree program.
•Counseling Learners regarding educational issues such as course and program selection, and class scheduling.
•Providing Learners with information on NCU policy and procedures.
•Maintaining accurate and complete Learner records as required by laws, administrative regulations and NCU Policies.
•Monitoring Learners academic progress by reviewing academic reports, reading the Learner journal entries, and consulting with mentors as required.
•Responding to Learner questions and concerns in a timely manner.
•Providing training to associate academic advisors.
•Attending University meeting and participating in committees
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES - There are no supervisory functions associated with this position.
QUALIFICATIONS Demonstrated experience working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. A professional and collegial attitude is a must. Must be a team player who is organized, with good time management skills and is comfortable with the use of technology. Previous experience working in academic advisement may be considered as an appropriate substitute for a conferred master’s degree.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE - Minimum qualifications include a master’s degree in business (MBA International Business preferred) and a minimum of 2 years in academic advising, student services or training and development in a collegial setting. It is preferred that the applicant have prior experience working with international learners (actual oversees experience working in an educational setting a plus).
COMMUNICATION SKILLS - Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, University policies and procedures, and course outlines and syllabi. Ability to prepare letters, reports, and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from applicants, Learners, faculty mentors, the Board of Directors, employees of the University, and the general public. Ability to use and facilitate online communication including chat rooms, videoconferencing, and other technology based communication media.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism, such as formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
