Purpose of Position: THIS POSITION DIRECTS THE COMPANY IN INNOVATIVE HEALTHCARE DESIGN. The Director is the knowledge leader and manager of architectural and engineering services. This includes directing the company’s design functions, including Project Architecture, Working Drawings, Architectural Design, Site Design, Interior Design, Sustainable Design, and Engineering – Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing. The Director assures proper delivery of architectural and engineering services and manages the overall performance of the architectural and engineering groups.

Operations and Financial Decision Making Authority: This position oversees architecture and engineering management and is accountable for the performance and efficient delivery of architecture and engineering services.

General Duties and Responsibilities:
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Design:

•Directs the delivery of the firm’s architectural and engineering design services
•Provides creative and technical direction to the business development team with respect to architectural and engineering design
•Actively engages in projects, particularly in the concept developmentl and design stages, and coaches key professional personnel on design issues and opportunities.
•Develops and directs programs to maintain leading edge knowledge within the architectural and engineering groups with an emphasis on healthcare facilities planning and design
•Acts as the Architect of Record, the registered professional legally responsible for public health, safety, and welfare matters pertaining to the practice of architecture in accordance with various state laws.
•Insures the maintenance of architectural and engineering standards and procedures:
•Responsible for the integration of architectural and engineering services through design, contract documents, (drawings and specifications); assists in quality assurance on all projects, as appropriate.
•Works with Construction team to insure that design intent is maintained through construction.
•Assist with the preparation of design award submissions.

Marketing:

•Collaborates with Regional Managers and Directors of Business Development to engage with potential clients in meetings and presentations to discuss planning and design concepts
•Works with Marketing in the packaging and communication of knowledge emanating from the architectural and engineering groups
•Publishes and presents in select national venues on subjects ranging from evidence-based design to current innovation in healthcare facilities planning and design

Management:

•Recruits new architects and engineers and provides mentoring and training to all design personnel
•Directs the preparation of A&E budgets; reviews and manages expenditures.
•Provides risk management for the company through professional expertise, leadership and guidance of architectural and engineering services delivery
•Provides direction on the acquisition and maintenance of corporate and individual licensure in architectural and engineering services
REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions: Requirements include a Bachelor’s or Master’s (preferred) degree in Architecture with minimum of fifteen (15) years of relevant work experience, TO INCLUDE FIVE (5) YEARS OF LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE AS A PRINCIPAL IN A DESIGN FIRM SERVING THE HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY; applied leadership in the design-build industry; EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH THE HEALTHCARE INDUSTRY IN BOTH THE INPATIENT AND OUTPATIENT ENVIRONMENT; and client proposal and presentation preparation/delivery . Publication of articles and a history of public speaking in professional forums for the healthcare and desgin-build industry is a definite plus. Professional architecture registration required.

Knowledge, Skills/Abilities and Physical Requirements Necessary to Perform Essential Job Functions:

Knowledge:
•Knowledge of key issues and trends facing the HEALTHCARE industry, particularly those impacted by planning and design
•Thorough knowledge of the architectural and engineering professions, processes and procedures
•Knowledge of evidence-based design with an emphasis on the HEALTHCARE market
•Knowledge of corporate and individual licensure for the practices of architecture and engineering
•Expertise in the regulatory environment, including, but not limited building codes, planning and zoning regulations and project entitlement
•Thorough knowledge of all architectural and engineering disciplines and their interdependencies
•Strong computer aptitude, including working knowledge of computer assisted design (CAD) with knowledge of Building Information Modeling (BIM) a plus
•Thorough understanding of healthcare facility planning and healthcare industry related issues and practices
•Experience with design awards programs with a successful track record in securing national recognition for design excellence

Physical Requirements:
•Work is performed in an office setting
•Activities may be necessary outside normal office hours depending on workload and schedules
•Travel can be extensive at times (75 nights per year)
