Position Purpose:
The objective of the Apprentice Building Maintenance Mechanic program is to provide training, both academic and physical, which will enable the apprentice to attain a high level of proficiency as a journey level Building Maintenance Mechanic. This degree of competence will be accomplished by in depth on-the-job and classroom training. This program will help the apprentice to attain self-confidence, assuredness and satisfaction in their work. The apprentice will become familiar with the Districts work procedures, maintenance requirements and safety manual. The apprentice program will provide the District with skilled personnel who can work proficiently and competently in all phases of building maintenance.

Essential Functions:
Under close supervision, an Apprentice Building Maintenance Mechanic assists with and learns skilled mechanical/electrical systems repair and maintenance of buildings, garages, warehouses, substations and other District facilities. As an apprentice, it is expected that skills will be developed to journey level proficiency and that employees in this classification will perform the more skilled tasks as training permits.
Under direct supervision and instruction, an Apprentice Building Maintenance Mechanic will learn to perform a wide variety of building maintenance tasks and associated work. He/she will learn to maintain, repair, modify, design, fabricate and install various electrical and mechanical equipment and building hardware. He/she will learn piping and plumbing systems, electrical systems and controls, pneumatic controls, air conditioning/refrigeration and air handling systems, reading of blueprints and electrical schematics, operation of shop tools and equipment, safety procedures and various other skills.
REQUIREMENTS
With acceptance of employment in the apprentice program, the employee agrees to complete the program, as outlined below, so long as he/she remains employed by the District. After entry into the Apprentice Building Maintenance Mechanic program, the apprentice will not be advanced ahead of schedule. The District agrees to provide a journey level Building Maintenance Mechanic job to the employee upon his/her successful completion of the program. For successful completion of the program and appointment to journey level, the Apprentice must show evidence of completing all required formal training with a grade of "C" or greater and by performance evaluations from the supervisor in the on-the-job training. Recommendation to journey level will be made on an "Employee Performance Evaluation Report" form, and include attitude and progress evaluations, as well as skills demonstrated.
On-the-job training will be supplemented with mandatory after hours classroom instruction at a local community college. This instruction will be in the Mechanical/Electrical Technology field with a prescribed curriculum and class schedule. The program consists of a minimum of twelve courses of formal training specified herein, and 7200 hours of on-the-job training in the Districts facilities. Every effort will be made to coordinate formal and on-the-job training, however, the Apprentice is expected to perform all work assignments as directed by his/her supervisor. The nominal term of training shall be fifty-four months. Inability to maintain satisfactory progress in formal and on-the-job training of the apprenticeship program is sufficient cause for separation from the program and from the District. Failure to satisfy either of these requirements may result in holding the apprentice at his/her current level for six months. This procedure will not be allowed more than twice during the term of the apprenticeship.
