Principal Product Development Engineer
Memphis, Tennessee
Individual contributor position responsible for the design and development of medical implants and instrumentation as directed by the busi¬ness. This can include designing, testing and validation of new product, materials, and technologies. This position is also responsible for assisting and providing technical support to other functions of the business such as manufacturing, marketing, and sales.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Develop and design medical devices as outlined by the business
Maintain accurate records throughout the development process in order to comply with company and government standards and/or regulations
Produce and provide design drawings for both surgeons and manufacturing personnel during the development phase
Act as independent reviewer in formal Design Reviews
Provide technical assistance to the engineers and designers regarding design, manufacturing, quality and functional issues associated with new product development
Work without appreciable direction; exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives of assignment.
Remain current with technology and trends within the business. This is accom¬plished through attending courses both on the engineering and/or technical side, and the medical side
Identify new materials or technologies that may meet product market needs
Communicate with product divisions the identification and validation of materials/technologies for potential development projects
Work with manufacturing throughout the development phase of product development in order to ensure that products are produced in a safe, efficacious and quality manner all the while keeping within established time frames
Work with inventors/surgeons on the development of new products and/or ideas
Constantly strive to reduce commercialization times in an effort to remain competitive in the market place
Outline and coordinate the testing or analysis of new designs, materials, and technologies to achieve validation for the desired application. Report the performance evaluation of the design/ material/ technology by appropriate methods (i.e. Risk Analysis, Design Validation, etc.)
REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering with emphasis on product development, preferably on medical products
A minimum of nine years experience working in the development of medical implants and/or instrumentation is required. Equivalent experience in other mechanical fields will be considered (i.e. Aerospace, Automotive, Military, Marine, Advanced materials, etc.). Spine or Orthopedic product development experience desired.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
A demonstrated capacity for solving problems through creative designs
Excellent communication skills
Team oriented
Proven record of interacting, communicating and working with surgeons, researchers and other professionals in the evaluation, development and manufacture of medical products.
Computer literate; skilled with word processor, spreadsheet and e-mail software
