PURPOSE: Under supervision, will perform and contribute technical information regarding implementation and optimization of a vendor developed system for mitochondrial DNA typing by base composition derived from mass spectrometry data.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Validation and troubleshooting of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and electro-spray ionization time-of-flight (ESI-TOF) mass spectrometry systems.

• Design and optimization of additional mitochondrial DNA assays.

• Documentation of laboratory procedures performed.

• Routine processing of forensic samples.

• Providing routine, detailed updates on project status.

• Quality control and maintenance of instrumentation.
REQUIREMENTS
JOB QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree in Biological Sciences, Chemistry or related discipline and one to two years job related experience. Must have knowledge of the principles, theories, concepts, and practices of biological sciences and chemistry. Must have experience in mass-spectrometry instrumentation. Experience in design and optimization of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays necessary. Must have basic knowledge of forensic laboratory procedures used to collect and process evidence. Must have knowledge and use of laboratory equipment and techniques. Must have basic knowledge of quality control procedures and documentation. Excellent written and oral administrative skills necessary. Must be able to pass FBI security background investigation; and obtain and maintain FBI security clearance.
