AVP, Insurance Accounting

Assistant Vice President, Insurance AccountingPrimary responsibilities include managing the 3-person Insurance Accounting group and dealing with the insurance-specific balances of unearned Premium (UEP), losses, investments, deferred acquisition costs (DAC) and contingent commission. Involves interfacing with senior management of various business departments and participating in developing and implementing new customer relationships and reviewing existing relationships. The position works frequently with the reinsurance department, Statutory Reporting group, GAAP Reporting group and the Accounting Operations group. Responsible for providing monthly analysis and reconciliation of UEP, Loss reserves, DAC, contingent commission and investments. Month end responsibilities include recording of Actuarial projections, reconciliation of all insurance related General Ledger accounts, review of month end entries produced by other members of the Insurance Accounting group, and review of all entries proposed by the Statutory reporting group (quarterly). The Manager may also assist other accounting managers and senior management with various financial and accounting projects as deemed necessary and permitted by time. The Manager facilitates internal and external audits request related Insurance Accounting items.Requires an Accounting degree with either CPA certificate or passage of licensing examination, along with a high degree of financial acumen, including strong analytical and problem solving techniques and an ability to interpret and communicate complex data in meaningful and relevant ways. A fundamental knowledge and understanding of general and statutory (preferred) accounting principles and practices is essential, along with the interpretation and application of accounting theory. Advanced Excel skills strongly preferred. Demonstrated ability to effectively manage time and deadlines is a must, as is the ability to clearly communicate audit requirements, state compliance issues and personal opinions. Must be able to manage staff at all levels, including: Clearly communicating performance standards and expectations. Providing on-going coaching, feedback and development suggestions to improve individual performance. Requires a successful track record of effectively managing change and continual process improvement.
