1st Vice President, Risk Analysis
This position performs credit risk assessments on all matters related to Countrywide's key credit risk management policies, procedures and functions. This involves assessing the adequacy of credit risk management relative to areas such as existing loan products and new product development processes, portfolio assets, off-balance sheet risks, credit risk related committees, management reports, models and tools. The position will also provide strategic direction and tactical leadership by consulting with business managers regarding best practices on issues including but not limited to credit risk identification, measurement, analysis, monitoring and control.
Specific duties involve assessing the following relative to the Countrywide Credit Committee and its subcommittees:
Appropriateness, completeness and currency of the charters
The packages, presentations and minutes for each of these committee meetings for completeness and effectiveness in fulfilling the committees’ charters
Ability and success in effecting change in credit risk management policies and procedures when appropriate and in making corrective action interventions when necessary.
Will also be required to review, fully understand and assess the key management information reports regarding credit risk management for accuracy and appropriateness of the metrics and analysis provided. Assess each report to determine if it is giving the user(s) adequate and relevant information in an efficient and useful format, in a timely manner. Meet with the business unit managers that utilize the reports to review the assessment and discuss areas for possible improvement.
Will assess the quality, accuracy and completeness of risk and control descriptions, risk ratings, risk probabilities and estimated exposures that the business units have documented in CORAD. Will make suggestions for improvement that would be suitable for presenting to risk matrix owners and the senior business unit managers.
Partner with other Countrywide professional staff as well as appropriate external consultants in order to assist in achievement of Enterprise Risk Management’s (ERA) divisional goals.
Assess the ability of the current infrastructure, resources, training, and technology of the credit risk management organization to fulfill the credit risk management function and assure successful attainment of organizational goals, while remaining compliant with all relevant laws, regulations and internal policies.
Monitor industry trends and credit risk management methods in order to serve as a resource for identifying issues that will affect the credit risk exposure of Countrywide and to identify new credit risk management best practices.
Complete special projects at the direction of ERA management or the Board of Directors pertaining to general risk assessment/management matters.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Economics or related field is required while a post-graduate degree is highly desirable.
Experience at designing and implementing qualitative and quantitative metrics to enhance credit risk measurement and management is highly desirable.
Proven professional presence, strong analytical skills and strong written and verbal communications skills.
In-depth knowledge of residential (and preferably commercial) mortgage lending and direct experience in complex credit risk assessment/management activities that would typically be acquired after performing at least 10 years as a manager in a lending institution.
10 years of progressively responsible experience in credit risk operations, assessment or management in a large, complex financial institution.
Extensive knowledge and be well versed in the credit operations functions as well as the current principles and trends associated with mortgage lending, credit risk management policies, procedures, techniques and tools of credit risk management (i.e. statistical analysis, scoring, post-funding mitigation).
PC proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) to prepare reports, spreadsheets and visual presentations that would be typically needed when making presentations to senior management or committees.
