Under general supervision, establish and oversee vehicular maintenance program; repair, maintain and service vehicles and grounds equipment, assist other trades as directed.
ASSIGNMENT
100% of full time, 37.5 hours per week, 12 months per year; Schedule may change to occasionally include some evening or weekend hours, as needed. Work Location: West Valley-Mission Community College District.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
$3,966 entry-level salary / $5,226 maximum earnable excluding longevity and educational growth

QUALIFICATIONS
Equivalent to completion of apprentice program in engine operations and repair AND
Three years experience as a skilled line mechanic working in all phases of automatic mechanical repair.
Candidates with foreign degrees must provide official certification of equivalency to U.S. degrees by a certified U.S. credential review service. Simple translations of the language on foreign diplomas, transcripts, coursework, or similar documentation will NOT suffice; thus, will cause the application packet to be judged as incomplete.
Demonstrated ability to work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Demonstrated Knowledge Of:
Methods, tools, equipment and materials used in the repair and maintenance of motorized equipment;
Principles of internal combustion engines; and
Electrical systems associated with a variety of vehicles and equipment.
Demonstrated Ability To:
Use shop equipment and tools to make major and minor repairs;
Diagnose and correct mechanical and electrical difficulties;
Follow oral and written directions;
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
Read and interpret blueprints;
Learn other related skills;
Work under time restraints, to be able to fulfill the project needs of the District; and
Effectively interact with people of diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT(S)
Possession of a valid California Class “C” Driver’s License.
MENTAL AND PHYSICAL EFFORT REQUIREMENTS
As part of the essential functions of this position, incumbents are required to:
Understand, follow and implement written, verbal or demonstrated instructions;
Perform simple addition and subtraction, copy figures, count and record numbers and write identifying information;
Request supplies verbally or in writing;
Perform heavy work; exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, exert up to 50 pounds of force frequently and exert up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects;
Have far, near and mid-range and color vision as well as depth perception, with or without corrective lenses; and
Be able to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions on a regular basis.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Inspect vehicles and equipment; identify and diagnose mechanical, electrical and hydraulic defects.
Overhaul, repair and adjust transmissions, differentials, clutches, brakes, starters, generators, carburetors systems, steering, light, bearing, exhaust and smog systems.
Examine engines replacing and rebuilding parts and completing other repairs as necessary.
Complete routine tune-ups, oil changes, lubrication, battery maintenance, tire changes and other service work.
Assist in maintenance skilled and semi-skilled tasks as designated.
Assist in basic repairs of vehicles outside of the District auto shop as necessary.
Fabricate and/or repair parts.
Review work orders to plan activities.
Develop and maintain a program of preventive maintenance.
Develop recommendations for future department, equipment and parts needed.
Maintain safety standards in conformance with state and insurance regulations.
Assign, review, and inspect work of mechanics.
Present to the supervisor matters requiring the supervisor’s decision. Act on the supervisor’s directives and recommendations.
Communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors within the area of responsibility.
Attend and participate in District and/or College provided training or information sessions. Incorporate new information or technology into existing job duties as directed by supervisor.
Able to react to change productively and handle other essential tasks as assigned.
