Accountant III
Summary/Position Objectives:
Reporting to the Accounting Manager, this position assists in the activities surrounding the preparation of financial statements and supporting documentation, performance of monthly financial analysis activities, and reviewing accounting system inputs/outputs for accuracy and reasonableness.
This position’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, preparing and analyzing advanced reports, monitoring transactional impact to financial statements, performing complex analysis of financial information over one or more of Schaller Anderson’s legal entities, and preparing and reviewing general ledger account reconciliations. This position’s responsibilities also include assembling, obtaining, and reviewing supporting documentation for posting monthly closing journal entries. Incumbent cross-trains to support varied accounting and finance functions. Incumbent gathers, processes, and summarizes complex financial information to provide support to the organization’s fiscal functions and applies accounting reporting requirements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and cost-reimbursement principles related to the goals of the company.
Responsibilities:
Essential Functions:
Performs all necessary research, preparation and assembling of required supporting documentation, provides actual versus budget variance analyses for one or more of Schaller Anderson’s legal entities and prepares clearly written explanations within the established month end deadlines to be used in the Company’s MD&A section of the financial package
Prepares, posts, and reconciles journal entries on a monthly basis; prepares and reviews general ledger account reconciliations to determine the accuracy and completeness of the general ledger
Assists the Accounting Manager in organization and day to day operation of the department by providing input to prioritize the daily functions of the department; provides oversight responsibilities of staff accountants
Provides guidance and training to Staff Accountants with other account reconciliations or analysis as assigned
Interfaces with external and internal auditors; assimilates and provides supporting documentation under the direction of the Accounting Manager
Assists the Accounting Manager with the preparation of financial statements for distribution to executive management
Makes recommendations for process improvements and enhancements to department policies and controls
Prepares other ad-hoc reports as needed
Performs specific functions as assigned by Accounting Manager, which could include:
Provides oversight of the revenue recognition process, as set forth by Company policy, and the performance of revenue variance analyses
Prepares quarterly and annual tax provision schedules
Reads and interprets contracts/agreements and applies appropriate accounting principles
Prepares, records, and reconciles inter-company transactions
Determines accruals at month-end based upon actual/estimated activity
Prepares and reviews cash flow projections
Reviews policies and procedures as considered necessary
Maintains fixed assets, leases, investments, contracts, etc. data

REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge and Skills:
Incumbent needs the ability to perform detailed and disciplined work using standard methodologies in the analysis, design, development, evaluation, documentation, implementation, and support of accounting and business finance procedures. Incumbent must have effective and advanced organization and coordination skills, and the ability to effectively prioritize multiple tasks. Incumbent must have effective written and oral communication skills, the ability to perform detailed variance analysis, and to analyze supporting documentation for accounting transactions; effective presentation skills in one-on-one and small group settings to organization employees; and the ability to use advanced reason to define problems, collect data, establish fact, and draw valid conclusions. Incumbent must be able to design, implement, and manage appropriate action plans and meet deadlines as established by the Accounting Manager. Advanced skills in mathematical applications are necessary. Incumbent must have proficiency with Great Plains, Lawson, FRx Reporter, Excel, and other Microsoft Office Suite applications and common computer and office hardware.
Education and Work Experience:
Bachelor of Arts or Science in Accounting or a closely related field is strongly preferred at this level, although an equivalent combination of formal education and recent related experience may substitute for a degree. Incumbent must have a minimum of three years of experience in Accounting. A minimum of two years of experience in general ledger and variance analysis is required. Experience in a managed health care environment preferred; experience in multi-state operations desirable. This position requires work experience in a complex, competitive environment with diverse racial and socio-economic factors. Effective interpersonal skills, maturity, and good judgment are required.
